I recently traveled to rome on a family holiday and I would love to share my experience with you and give you ideas on what you could do when you go to Rome!
Our accomadation was very close to the Colosseum so we were able to see it every day when we went out and about around Rome! I found this incredible because I learnt about the colosseum in history class and it was amazing to see it in real life.
On the first day we went around Rome to find our bearings and looked at all the fantastic buildings. We visited the Colloseum and went out for dinner that night in a restaurant called "La Tavernelle". I ordered pasta Carbonara there and it was very nice. There was an amazing icecream shop across from our accomadation called "Il Gelatone". It was a reasonable price and in my opinion the best icecream I had while in Rome!
On the second day we went to the Vatican City. The Vatican City is a big area so you need to take a day to visit it if you really want to enjoy yourself. The Vatican City is not walking distance from the center of Rome so we took a train there. When we arrived there was a que a mile long but we booked our tickets online before we got there so we were able to just walk in! If you don't prebook your tickets be prepared to que for at least 2 hours! They have a strict dress code so make sure you were long pants and have your shoulders covered. The Vatican City was incredible and I loved being able to see the ceiling of the Sistine chapel painted by Michaelangelo. We also saw St. Peter's Basilica. I definitely recommend giving the Vatican City a visit!
On the third day we went to the Trevi Fountain. I was most excited to see this as it was in a lot of movies based in Rome. Apparently if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain you are guaranteed to return to Rome. If you ever visit Rome go to this Fountain and make a wish! It looked even better in real life than in the movies! It was definitely worth the visit.
We also saw the Roman Forum. It was amazing. My favourite chapter in history was Ancient Rome so I loved going sightseeing on this holiday!
On the fourth day we went around the shops. There were streets with shops like Zara and Sephora but there were also a lot of expensive shops too! One of the streets had shops like Prada and Valentino. I think Rome is an amazing city for shopping! Near the shops there is a big building called "Altare della Patria". This building was incredible and stuck with me the most! The people living in Rome nickname it "Wedding cake" because they think it looks like a cake!
On the fifth day we visited the Pantheon. We went inside and it was worth the visit. There is a hole in the ceiling to let in light and at Christmas, if it snows it snows inside the building! We visited an icecream shop that is meant to be the best in Rome called "Giolitti" and I must say the icecream was amazing! That afternoon we went to a park for a walk and it was beautiful there. There was a lake where you could rent a boat and you could also rent bikes.
On the sixth day we went to a town on the other side of the river Tiber. It was called "Trastevere". We went to a well know pizza restaurant there called "Dar Poeta". It was difficult to find and a couple from America were also trying to find it! It is known to sell the best pizza in Rome and I would have to agree with this statement!
I hope this helps anyone is who is hoping to travel to Rome. Going to Rome was an amazing experience and I hope I visit it again some day!
Thanks for reading!
